Dear Tom,
-How went your first contact with John Denver, where, and your incorporation to the band?
In 1972, I heard that John didn’t have a lead guitar player. We moved to Aspen so he could discover me. I was playing in a coffee house at night, and playing après ski, waiting for John to walk in and discover me.
It turns out he did already have a lead player (Mike Taylor), but he later decided to let Mike go, and he performed alone, or with just Dick Kniss on bass for about 6 months, to strengthen his own guitar playing.
I ran into John downtown at the hardware store, but I resisted the temptation to tell him who I was and why I moved to Aspen.
One day, my phone rang, and it was John calling. He said he’d heard good things about my playing, and asked if I’d be interested in auditioning to be his new guitarist. (I said YES). The first interview was at my house. We played beautifully together, and time disappeared. We thought we’d been playing about an hour, but it had been three hours. That was a very good sign. I really wish I’d taped those 1st ‘interviews’. We played so naturally together.
Then he invited me to his house, and the same thing happened. He also wanted Annie to meet me, and see what kind of ‘vibe’ she got from me.
Then he wanted his road manager, Kris O’Conner to hear me, back at my house. After our first song, Kris said “I think you’ve found a guitarist, John. Can we go fishing now? “
A few days later, he came over and asked me if I’d join his band. Two weeks later we were in New York, recording John Denver’s Greatest Hits, Volume 1.
-When you finished the collaboration with him? And why? If you don’t mind my saying…
When Elvis Presley died, John had a chance to hire the legendary James Burton. He also hired Elvis’s piano player (Glenn D. Harding), and later, his bass player, Emory Gordy. John had always wanted to work with James, and that was the end of my collaboration with John.

(Le dije que SI). La primera entrevista fue en mi casa. Estuvimos tocando juntos de maravilla y el tiempo se desvaneció. Pensamos que habíamos estado tocando durante una hora, pero en realidad habían sido tres. Eso era un buen signo. Realmente me hubiera gustado grabar aquellas primeras entrevistas. Tocábamos juntos de una manera muy natural.
Entonces me invitó a su casa, y volvió a ocurrir lo mismo. También buscó a Annie para que me conociera y viera que clase de persona era.
Entonces buscó a su manager, Kris O'Connor para que me escuchara a la vuelta a mi casa. Después de la primera canción Kris dijo "pienso que ya has encontrado guitarrista John" ¿podemos ir a pescar ya?
Unos días más tarde vino y me preguntó si me incorporaría a su banda. Dos semanas más tarde estábamos en Nueva York grabando el John Denver's Greatest Hits Volumen 1.

Cuando Elvis Presley murió, John tuvo la ocasión de contratar al legendario James Burton. También contrató al pianista de Elvis (Glenn D. Harding) y después a su bajista (Emory Gordy). John siempre tuvo el deseo de trabajar con James y aquello fue el final de mi colaboración con John.
